Nepal is known for its long-distance hiking trails, such as Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit, which cover many kilometers and gain significant elevations. This may not be for everyone. Trekking in the Langtang region is ideal for those who do not want to commit to an exhausting hike, but still want to experience the essence of trekking in Nepal.
The Langtang region is located north of Kathmandu, geographically closest to the Himalayas of the capital. The huge ridge of snow and ice called Langtang Himal creates a powerful natural barrier with a height of more than 7,000 m bordering Tibet. The mountains and valley below are part of Langtang National Park, the first designated national park in the entire Himalayan range.
Trekking through Langtang region offers more than just scenic peaks - it’s one of Nepal’s top destinations for spotting wildlife in the Himalayas. The park is home to a surprising variety of animals, from playful langurs and curious macaques in the lower forests, while higher up, Himalayan tahr (wild mountain goats) roam the slopes. The skies are ruled by Himalayan vultures and the majestic bearded vulture. And if lucky, you might spot a red panda or signs of a snow leopard nearby. Few places in Nepal offer such a rich blend of trekking and wildlife observation as Langtang.
