Types of Peak Climbing in Nepal

There are 27 peaks under 6,000 meters that are supervised by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). These NMA peaks require a permit for an expedition attempt, while a few, like Tharpu Chuli (Tent Peak) in the Annapurna Region, don't.

Among the 27 NMA peaks, some are called "trekking peaks." Don't let the name fool you—while they offer significant challenges, they don't require prior mountaineering or technical equipment experience. We provide a one-day training session at base camp before the final summit push. The challenges include navigating glaciers, traversing snowfields, and using fixed ropes and proper climbing gear on steeper sections.

Common trekking peaks like Mera Peak (6,470m), Island Peak (6,189m), and Lobuche East Peak (6,119m) are very popular with mountaineering enthusiasts.

For more experienced climbers, truly challenging peaks like Kyajo Ri (6,186m) involve significant hurdles like climbing on extremely steep mixed rock and ice, navigating extreme terrain, and long pushes to the summit. These challenges require a mastery of technical equipment and previous climbing experience.
