Trek Overview

The Bethanchowk Narayanthan Viewpoint Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Dhunkharka in Kavrepalanchok district, taking 2.5 to 3 hours by private vehicle, jeep, or local bus.

From Dhunkharka, you walk into Bethanchowkvillage, set among terraced fields and forested slopes at around 2,100 m.

The second day is the heart of the trek. From Bethanchowk, you climb steadily through community forest toward Narayanthan, the highest point of the Mahabharat Range at 3,000 m. This demanding short trek covers 6 to 7 hours round trip, gaining height steadily rather than gently.

A small Vishnu shrine sits at the summit, and on a clear day the view runs from the lowland Terai in the south to a long stretch of Himalayan peaks in the north.

This is not a casual afternoon walk. It rewards a fit, well-prepared trekker with one of the widest panoramas near Kathmandu, without the time or cost of a longer mountain trek. After the summit, you descend back to Bethanchowk for the night before driving back to Kathmandu on the final day.

Why Trek With Himalayan Ecstasy Nepal?

We know this route well and help you plan it around your fitness level and available time. Here is what we handle on the Bethanchowk Narayanthan Viewpoint Trek.

  • Private Transport: We arrange private vehicle transfers from Kathmandu to Dhunkharka and back.
  • Pacing and Route Guidance: Our guides know the climb to Narayanthan well and set a pace matching your fitness and the day's weather.
  • Flexible Overnight Planning If the descent feels tiring, we arrange an extra night at Bethanchowk rather than rushing back, as covered in Trip Options below.
  • Local Homestay Coordination: We book community homestays in Bethanchowk, giving you a genuine look at farming life in the hills.

Main Attractions

  • Bethanchowk Village: Bethanchowk, close to Dhunkharka, sits at around 2,100 m in the southern hills of Kavrepalanchok district. It is a farming community known for terraced fields and a growing number of homestays. Here the trek settles into a slower pace, with village life, home-cooked meals, and the starting point for the climb ahead.
  • Narayanthan Viewpoint and Temple: Narayanthan, at 3,000 m, is the highest point of the Mahabharat Range and is often called the King of Hills. A small temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu sits at the summit, drawing local devotees during religious festivals. What you experience here is a genuinely wide 360-degree view, with the Terai plains visible to the south and, on a clear day, a long stretch of Himalayan peaks to the north. We always recommend checking the weather before the climb, since cloud cover can hide the view entirely.
  • Mahabharat Range Panorama: The Mahabharat Range forms the southern rim of hills separating the Kathmandu Valley from the lowland Terai. From Narayanthan, this is one of the few points near Kathmandu where both the plains and the high Himalaya are visible together. Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and Langtang appear along the northern horizon when the sky is clear, usually best in the early morning before haze builds up.

Essential Information

Best Time to Trek

Autumn (October to November) offers the clearest skies and the best chance of a full 360-degree view. Winter (December to February) is cold, with light snowfall possible at the summit.

Spring (March to May) brings warmer, clearer mornings, though afternoon haze can reduce visibility. We do not recommend the monsoon months (June to September), when rain and cloud cover make the climb harder and less rewarding.

Permits Required

This route passes through community forest and village land rather than a national park or conservation area, so no formal entry permit or conservation fee applies. We still recommend carrying your passport for identification at any local checkpoints.

Difficulty Level

This trek is moderate to demanding, and the summit day genuinely tests your fitness. The 6 to 7 hour round trip climb to Narayanthan gains steady altitude with limited flat sections, so prior walking experience helps.

The trek can be done in two days by a strong walker, but we generally recommend the three-day plan, which spreads the effort and avoids rushing the descent.

Accommodation and Food to Expect

You will stay in a local homestay or community lodge at Bethanchowk, with simple rooms and shared facilities. Meals are home-cooked, often using vegetables grown in the village, alongside dal bhat and basic breakfast items.

There are no shops along the climb to Narayanthan, so all food and water for summit day must be carried from Bethanchowk.

Preparation Tips

  • Physical Preparation: Regular hiking or cardio training in the weeks before your trip helps with the demanding summit day.
  • Hydration and Food: Carry enough water and a packed lunch on summit day, since nothing is available along the climb.
  • Health: Consult your doctor before the trek, particularly if you have any concerns about sustained uphill walking.
  • Documents and Money: Bring your passport for identification and Nepalese Rupees in cash, since there are no ATMs beyond Kathmandu.

TRIP OPTIONS

  • Two-Day Express Version: Strong trekkers with limited time can complete this trek in two days by combining the drive, the walk into Bethanchowk, and part of the ascent on day one, then summiting and returning to Kathmandu on day two. This needs a higher energy level and a steady pace throughout.
  • Extra Night at Bethanchowk: If the descent from Narayanthan feels tiring, we add an extra night at Bethanchowk rather than driving back to Kathmandu the same day, suiting trekkers who prefer a relaxed pace.

Equipment Lists

Proper preparation makes every trek more comfortable!
