Upper Mustang [29.2347° N latitude and 83.9257° E] is a restricted region bordering Tibet, and Lo Manthang is its ancient walled capital. This 6-day private jeep tour runs entirely from Pokhara, covers the highlights of the "Forbidden Kingdom" without any trekking requirement, and includes all permits, a licensed guide, meals, and standard teahouse accommodation. The new USD 50-per-day permit structure (effective late 2025) makes short jeep tours far more accessible than before.
Short Upper Mustang Jeep Tour - 6 Days
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
- A drive through the world's deepest gorge.
- Reach the only remaining walled city in the Himalayas.
- Explore Gharphu cave settlements near Lo Manthang.
- Visit the longest Mani wall in Nepal at Ghami.

Upper Mustang sits on the high-altitude desert plateau north within the Annapurna region, where the landscape shifts from green river valleys into something that looks and feels like the Tibetan plateau.
Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo, has been standing since the 15th century. This short jeep tour is designed as a drive-in, drive-out itinerary starting and ending in Pokhara.
No prior trekking experience is required. If you want to meet beforehand to sort logistics, we can arrange that in Pokhara. Permits will be handled in Kathmandu by our Himalayan Ecstasy Nepal through our licensed agency, so that side of things is taken care of before you leave.
Upper Mustang Jeep Tour Main Attractions
Upper Mustang sits in a rain shadow, which means it stays accessible during Nepal's summer/monsoon season (June to August) when most other regions see heavy rain and poor visibility. That alone sets it apart from nearly every other destination in Nepal.
Here are the main highlights you cover on this tour:
- Lo Manthang Walled City: The only remaining walled city in the Himalayas, built in the 15th century. The mud-brick walls stand roughly 6 meters high and encircle a medieval townscape of narrow alleys, flat-roofed houses, and monastery courtyards.
- Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Lhakhang: Two of the most significant monasteries in Lo Manthang, both containing original 15th-century murals in remarkably preserved condition.
- Gharphu Cave Settlements (Chhoser): Ancient cliff-face cave dwellings carved into the rock above the valley floor, used historically for shelter, meditation, and storage. Accessible as a side trip from Lo Manthang.
- Ghami Village and Mani Wall: Ghami (3,520 m) is home to what is considered the longest Mani wall in Nepal, a centuries-old prayer wall stretching across the village. The village also has an ancient monastery and a relaxed, agricultural character that feels genuinely untouched.
- Tibet Border Viewpoint: The Nepal-Tibet (China) border sits a short drive north of Lo Manthang. Your guide takes you to the viewpoint area, where the high plateau opens toward Tibet. Entry into Chinese territory is not permitted.
- Muktinath Temple (3,800 m): A significant Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site on the return route. The temple complex includes 108 water spouts and an eternal flame fed by natural gas. Most pilgrims visit early morning or late afternoon.
- Kali Gandaki Gorge: The drive down from Ghami to Ghami through Jomsom follows the Kali Gandaki River, which runs through what is considered the world's deepest gorge measured between Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and Annapurna I (8,091 m).
- Marpha Village: A well-preserved Thakali village south of Jomsom, known for apple orchards, whitewashed stone lanes, and the apple products (juice, jam, brandy) produced locally.
- Rain Shadow Advantage: Unlike the rest of Nepal, Upper Mustang stays dry even in monsoon. This makes the June to August window genuinely good for jeep tours, with clear blue skies and minimal trail traffic.
Short Upper Mustang Jeep Tour - 6 Days Itinerary
You fly or drive from Pokhara to Jomsom. The flight takes around 25 minutes and puts you directly into the lower Mustang valley.
From Jomsom, you continue by private jeep, crossing through Kagbeni and entering the restricted zone with permit checks at the checkpoint.
The drive to Ghami takes 4 to 5 hours, passing through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, desert terrain, and ancient roadside chortens.
A 3 to 4-hour drive north brings you to Lo Manthang. Along the way, you cross Lo La Pass (3,950 m) and pass through the village of Tsarang, with its fortress-like monastery visible on the ridge.
Lo Manthang comes into view from a distance as a compact mud-brick walled city against a backdrop of barren ridgelines and distant snow peaks! The afternoon is free for you to walk the narrow lanes inside the walls.
Today is a full 6 to 8 hours of sightseeing. The main monastery complex includes Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Lhakhang, both with centuries-old murals. The former Royal Palace stands at the centre of the walled town.
In the afternoon, your guide takes you toward the Nepal-Tibet border area and the Gharphu cave settlements, ancient cliff dwellings carved into the rock above the valley.
Today will be your second full day inside the restricted area. You can go for a border viewpoint visit, the outer walls and defensive architecture of the old town, and additional monastery interiors that were not covered on Day 3.
Your guide can arrange a monastery entrance and explain the history of the former Kingdom of Lo too. Just make sure to tell him/her that you're interested!
It's going to be long drive day of 6 to 7 hours today as you head south. You'll pass Muktinath Temple, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, and have time for a short visit before continuing through Jomsom to Marpha.
Well, Marpha is a compact stone village known for apple orchards, local apple brandy, and a well-preserved old town. Your overnight in Marpha is indeed going to be absolutely worthwhile!
You can take a 25-minute flight from Jomsom to Pokhara after a short drive from Marpha back to Jomsom. At HEN, we even provide a full day's drive if the weather disrupts flights (or you want a full drive experience passing via Tatopani).
Note that this day also serves as a weather buffer given the wind sensitivity of the Jomsom airstrip. Anyway, by the end of the evening, you'll be in Lakeside, Pokhara, where we shall drop you and the Short Upper Mustang Jeep Tour ends here.
