Paragliding in Nepal is one of the most accessible adventure activities available. You don't need physical fitness, climbing skills, or any prior experience. What you need is the willingness to step off a hill and trust the wind.
The flight itself feels nothing like you expect. Your pilot handles all the technical work. You simply float above the landscape, feeling weightless while the Himalayas expand around you.
At HEN, we run tandem paragliding packages from three locations in Nepal. Each offers different perspectives and flight durations. Whether you have a full day or just want to fit an hour of flying into an existing itinerary, there's an option that works!
What is Paragliding?
Paragliding is foot-launched unpowered flight using a specially designed parachute. A pilot launches from a ridge or towed into the air, finds rising air currents (thermals), and soars for as long as conditions allow.
Tandem paragliding pairs you with a certified pilot. You sit in a harness suspended below the parachute. The pilot controls everything. You experience the flight without managing equipment or technique. For most first-timers, it's the best introduction to flying.
The sensation is unique. Imagine floating in an invisible elevator while the ground slides past beneath you. There's no engine sound. The air is quiet. You hear your pilot giving explanations, pointing out landmarks, and narrating what's happening with the wind and thermals.
Why Choose Paragliding in Nepal?
Nepal's geography makes it exceptional for paragliding. The Himalayas create consistent thermal activity. Mountain ridges serve as natural launch points. River valleys provide safe landing areas. The scenery from altitude is genuinely world-class.
More practically, Nepal offers tandem flights at a fraction of costs in Europe or North America. Multiple sites mean you can choose based on your location. Professional operators maintain international safety standards. And the experience fits easily into a broader Nepal trip.
Paragliding Location Options
Pokhara Mandre Dhunga (Primary Site)
Mandre Dhunga sits 1,200 meters above Pokhara's valley. It's the most frequently used tandem site in western Nepal.
The flight path traces the Sarangkot ridge and overlooks Fewa Lake and the Annapurna range. On clear days, you'll see Mt. Dhaulagiri and Machhapuchhre from altitude.
Flight duration is typically 30-45 minutes depending on thermal activity. Wind conditions here are reliable year-round, though October through November and March through April offer peak flying conditions with strongest thermals and clearest skies.
The drive from Pokhara city center takes about one hour by jeep. Our packages include round-trip transport, professional safety briefing, certified pilot, tandem flight, and lunch at the site. Most travelers complete the entire experience by early afternoon, leaving time for other Pokhara activities afterward.
Sarangkot (Alternative)
Sarangkot is famous for sunrise hiking and paragliding launches. The ridge rises 1,592 meters directly above Pokhara.
From the air, you get unobstructed views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre. The vantage point is higher than Mandre Dhunga, offering more expansive Himalayan perspectives.
Flight duration here matches Mandre Dhunga: 30-45 minutes. Many travelers combine an early sunrise hike to Sarangkot with a paragliding flight afterward. This option packs more adventure into a single day and creates a complete mountain experience.
The site is closer to Pokhara than Mandre Dhunga, reducing overall drive time. It works especially well for photographers seeking dramatic light at launch and landing.
Chandragiri Hills (Newer Option)
Chandragiri opened as a tandem paragliding site recently and is game-changing for Kathmandu-based travelers. It's accessible from the capital, making paragliding convenient without a Pokhara trip.
The site offers excellent views of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding ridgelines stretching toward Langtang.
Flight duration: 20-30 minutes (shorter than Pokhara sites due to altitude and thermal patterns). The flight still delivers stunning valley views and mountain scenery, just in a more compact timeframe.
Chandragiri works perfectly for travelers who lack time for a Pokhara trip but want to experience paragliding. The entire package (transport, flight, lunch) fits into a single day from Kathmandu with minimal logistics.
How Your Paragliding Day Goes?
You meet your pilot at the departure point early in the morning. A drive follows to the launch site.
Duration varies by location:
- Pokhara sites (Mandre Dhunga, Sarangkot) take 1-2 hours from Pokhara city center.
- Chandragiri Hills takes 45 minutes from Kathmandu.
During the drive, your pilot answers questions about the flight and weather conditions.
At the site, your pilot reviews safety procedures and asks basic health questions. A proper fitting of your harness follows.
This step is not brief: comfort and safety during flight depend on correct harness setup. Your pilot adjusts everything to your body size and posture.
Your pilot gives a final briefing: how to position your body during launch, what to expect when you feel the first thermal lifting you, and what happens when approaching landing.
Most pilots explain that you'll feel completely safe once airborne, even though it seems counterintuitive before your first flight.
Then you walk to the launch point. Your pilot counts down. You run three steps forward and lift off. In seconds, you're airborne. The ground falls away. Your stomach registers the sensation briefly. Then everything feels natural and quiet!
The flight is mostly quiet and peaceful. Your pilot explains landmarks and points out villages, rivers, and mountains.
If thermals are strong, you might gain altitude and see farther. If conditions are gentle, you descend steadily toward the landing zone.
As you approach, your pilot maneuvers toward a field. The landing is smooth as you simply walk the last few steps to the ground. Most first-timers report being surprised by how gently the landing feels.
Total time: about 3-4 hours including transport, briefing, flight, and return to your starting point.

Paragliding in Nepal FAQs
Yes. Tandem paragliding is one of Nepal's safest adventure activities. Certified international pilots manage all technical aspects. You sit securely in a harness while the pilot handles launch, flight controls, and landing. Operators use modern, regularly maintained equipment meeting international safety standards.
October-November and March-April offer clearest skies and most reliable thermals across all sites. Flying is possible year-round. Winter (December-February) has cooler air and good visibility but fewer thermal hours. Monsoon (June-September) brings moisture and unpredictable conditions, though flights still operate when weather allows.
Flight time is 30-45 minutes at Pokhara sites (Mandre Dhunga, Sarangkot). Chandragiri flights typically last 20-30 minutes due to altitude and thermal patterns. Total package time including transport from your hotel, briefing, flight, and return is 3-4 hours.
