Essential Information

Kyajo Ri is a challenging semi-technical peak in the Khumbu region of Nepal, offering experienced climbers a less crowded alternative to more popular peaks. Standing at an elevation of 6,186 meters (20,295 feet), it is known for its steep and mixed terrain of rock, snow, and ice, with panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayas from the summit.

Location and access

  • Location: Kyajo Ri is situated in the Mahalangur Himal range, north of Namche Bazaar. It acts as the highest point on the southern ridge that separates the Thame Valley from the Gokyo Valley.
  • Starting point: Expeditions typically begin with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by several days of trekking through the Sagarmatha National Park. In our Kyajo Ri base camp to base camp peak climbing expedition, members will arrange their own logistics till Mende, where Himalayan Ecstasy's mountain climbing guide will meet them and trek to Kyajo Ri base camp.
  • Journey to base camp: The trek to Kyajo Ri Base Camp (approx. 4,550m) leaves the main Everest trail from Mende, a small settlement perched on a hill above the trail to Thame from Namche, and enters the isolated Kyajo Drangka valley.

Climbing features and difficulty

  • Technical challenges: The climb is graded as difficult and is significantly more technical than peaks like Island Peak. It requires experience with moderate rock climbing and steep alpine ice climbing.
  • Terrain: Climbers must navigate mixed terrain, including glaciers, rock sections, and steep snow and ice slopes. The route may feature sections of up to 55° or 65° in gradient.
  • Altitude and camps: The climb involves setting up two camps above base camp. Camp I is typically established around 5,200m and Camp II around 5,700m.
  • Summit push: The ascent from Camp II to the summit involves 12 pitches of technical climbing, requiring the use of fixed ropes and other technical gear.

Summit views and expedition highlights

  • Panoramic summit: The peak offers incredible 360-degree views of major Himalayan summits, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Ama Dablam.
  • Cultural immersion: The journey passes through traditional Sherpa villages, offering trekkers the chance to experience local culture and visit ancient monasteries.
  • Acclimatization options: We've included two acclimatization days; at the base camp and at camp 1, which helps with felxibility (in case of bad weather) and acclimatization.
  • Wildlife: The trek through Sagarmatha National Park provides an opportunity to see native flora and fauna, including potential sightings of Himalayan tahr and musk deer.
