Anil Bhattarai is the Executive Director at Himalayan Ecstasy Nepal, where he leads trekking and mountaineering expeditions, oversees itinerary planning, and ensures guests have safe and unforgettable Himalayan adventures.
Inspired by his elder brother, Anil started his journey in the mountains as a porter and has devoted over 30 years to mountaineering and trekking. His deep passion for the Himalayas, combined with hands-on experience, makes him a cornerstone of expertise and leadership at the company.
Early Introduction to Mountaineeting
Anil’s mountaineering journey began under the guidance of his elder brother, serving as a porter on treks. Growing up with five brothers, all actively involved in mountaineering, ignited his passion for climbing.
Over the years, he progressed from porter to trekking guide, climbing guide, and expedition cook, mastering the skills required to lead Himalayan adventures with professionalism and discipline.
Everest Summit and Other Mountaineering Achievements
Anil’s extensive experience culminated in a historic personal achievement: on June 4, 2005, he successfully summited Mount Everest, becoming the first Brahmin in the Hindu community to reach the world’s highest peak. He climbed from the North Col (Tibetan side) with the Adventure Peaks expedition, carrying his janai (sacred thread), Geeta (a pious Hindu book), and betel.
His Everest journey demonstrates remarkable perseverance. Prior to his successful summit, Anil had reached 8,500 meters in 2003 and attempted again in 2004, retreating at 7,900 meters. Following the 2005 summit, he continues to express a desire to climb Everest from the south side with future sponsorship.
Anil has also climbed Mount Cho-Oyu, further highlighting his high-altitude expertise. Beyond personal achievements, he has played a pivotal role in guiding international climbers, including Jake Meyer, who became the youngest British climber to summit Everest under Anil’s leadership. His confirmed summit on June 4, 2005, alongside Jake Meyer, Di Gilbert(leader), and Mingma Nuru Sherpa, remains a highlight of his distinguished career.
Born in Hangdeva VDC, Taplejung district, Anil’s Everest accomplishment drew significant international attention for Nepal’s tourism sector. The Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Buddhiraj Bajracharya, formally recognized his achievement, presenting him with a letter of appreciation and a purse.
Anil’s personal philosophy, “Be controlled, think and do,” reflects his disciplined approach to mountaineering, leadership, and guiding others safely through the mountains.
